To do this we need to set some hard boundaries.

Food Stamps: Food stamps are a great way to help families. However, as one who lives daily on a budget knows, I can’t buy everything I want at the grocery store. I need to make decisions about what I can truly afford and what is nutritious enough to put into my body. As a citizen of this country I am willing to help a struggling family with things like milk, bread, meat, veggies. But I am not willing to buy them candy, energy drinks, or soda pop, when I myself can’t afford to be buying those things. Lets correct this major flaw in the food stamp program and see how much money we can save. That money could then go to more needy families or can simply stay as a reduction in the cost of the over all food stamp program.

EBT- Electronic Benifit Transfer

EBT is a card that holds governmental money that goes to lower income families (this should exclude unemployment benefits, and food stamps). Restrictions should be placed on what the card can be used for. This money should be used to offset rent, public transportation fair, vehicle/ vehicle maintenance (in rare circumstances to which public transportation does not provide adequate coverage), basic health insurance (if the state does not provide a separate health care program of its own for needy families), electricity/ heat/ water (providing that the state does not provide a separate energy assistance program for needy families), and other basic utilities (not including internet, tv, or cell phones). This EBT card should not exceed more than 50% of those needy families and 75-100% for those persons who have significant (as in considered wards of the state, and/ or require a type of medical supervision… including but not limited to downs syndrome, autism, non-functioning individuals) disabilities (and who live in a state that does not provide separate disabled services) total combined bills.

ie. housing costs 430, electricity costs 30, heat costs 30, the bus costs 100. (proofs needed to qualify the bills) Total bill costs $590. Benefits= $295

These benefits should be renewable every year, and should have conditions to which the social worker may request any proof during the year for verification and have the ability to amend the benefits based on the recipients changing situation. These benefits should also be given only to those recipients who are working, who are eligible for unemployment benefits, or who are significantly disabled.

Unemployment benefits:

It happens to everyone. A job is terminated and a person needs help. However, these benefits should be minimal. Lets give to families the equivalent of a part time minimum wage job; $7.50/ hr times 20 hours- minus tax. That is $130 a week take home pay. $520 a month. $6,240 a year. For only a year. Unemployment shouldn’t be easy. Unemployment benefits shouldn’t be a free ride. This gives the person an incentive to get out there and look for and accept a job.

Unemployment benefits, combined with EBT, and food stamps should provide a basic living standard. It is possible to live on these terms however, these terms are hardly comfortable. This provides incentives for families to work hard and continue to better themselves versus live off the welfare line. It also provides support to families who are struggling at the low income level but who are actively pursuing a better life.
